Floating Through Holland (and Belgium) by Brenda Davison
A review of my book…
“Believe me my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing”.... “In or out of ‘em, it doesn‘t matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that‘s the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don‘t; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you‘re always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you‘ve done it there‘s always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not.” From “Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame.
When John and I met I had never sailed and had never thought I would want to. John had sailed in yachts and dinghies all his adult life and he introduced me to the boating life. I was like the Mole in Kenneth Grahame‘s tale and soon came to agree with Ratty's sentiments about the boating life.
This book is the second in a series which follows our travels by water. On this occasion we took possession of a steel canal cruiser which we sailed from the Netherlands (Holland), through Belgium, and into France. The book not only describes our journey as we begin to get used to a new boat, but also gives a fascinating insight into the places we passed through as we travelled, and describes our feelings from the nervous excitement of setting off with the new boat, in a new country; through trepidation to confidence and even aplomb.”
